Abstract:

The letter from your Excellency to No. 8 with their several enclosures have been regularly received and laid before the King. Your attention to what passes at the Court where you reside and your diligence in transmitting clear and distinct accounts of the information you collect has deserved His Majesty’s approbation, and I have great pleasure in signifying it to you.
Though it is extremely proper that Your Excellency should show great attention to the Captain Pasha and encourage His good disposition to this Country as His services may be of material use You will be extremely cautious in deviating from the usual lone, lest the compliance to His wishes should bring on complaints from any European Power in alliance with His Majesty.
I have nothing to communicate to Your Excellency with regard to the Proposal made by the Porte respecting the conveyance of the East India Company’s pacquets to the Port of Suez. I hope the orders they have given to their several presidencies and the discretion of the Masters of their vessels will prevent any complaint being made to you by the Grand Signor’s Ministers. If timber for the Navy can become an article of Trade from the Levant to this Country it merits your attention, but the Merchants alone can judge how practicable it may be to carry on such a branch of commerce, and till a few trials have been made it seems impossible to judge by what means it may be expedient to support or encourage it.
