•     Επιστολή Αρ.6 του Robert Ainslie (Κωνσταντινούπολη, 16 Μαρτίου 1781) προς τον The Right Honorable The Earl of Hillsborough με την οποία τον ενημερώνει μεταξύ άλλων πως η Πύλη δεν είναι διατεθειμένη να αποδεχτεί το αίτημα της Ρωσίας για ελεύθερο διάπλου των σκαφών της και ελεύθερη διεξαγωγή διαμετακομιστικού εμπορίου μεταξύ Ρωσίας και Γαλλίας, γιατί διαφορετικά θα έθετε σε κίνδυνο την ίδια την ύπαρξή της. Κατά τον Ainslie αυτές οι διαφορές μεταξύ Πύλης και Ρωσίας φαίνεται πως δεν θα μπορέσουν να διευθετηθούν με φιλικό τρόπο. Μάλιστα επισημαίνει πως η Πύλη μοιάζει να υιοθετεί μία πιο δυναμική στάση απέναντι στην Ρωσία και προχωρά σε εξοπλισμό ισχυρού πολεμικού στόλου, σε οχυρώσεις και ενίσχυση φρουρίων και δυνάμεων σε Κριμαία, Ουτσακώφ και Δούναβη, ως απάντηση και στις αντίστοιχες προσπάθειες της Ρωσίας για ενίσχυση των συνόρων της προς την Τουρκία.
Συγκεκριμένα γράφει ο Ainslie:
The great activity in fitting out respectable fleet, and the orders issued for securing the frontiers have no room to doubt of the apprehensions entertained here; at the same time that these demonstrations of vigour announce a change in the passive system lately adopted by this court. The rights of transit through the canal of Constantinople claimed for the Russians flag will certainly be refused. This right upon which depend all the advantages of the projected trade, nay the very existence of the Russian mercantile navigation in the Black Sea and in the Mediterranean would, if established, commit the independence and the security of this empire, at least this is the light in which it is seen by all ranks of people here. On this account more particularly there is very little appearance that the differences between Russia and the Porte are in a fair way of being amicably adjusted. […]
