Abstract:

No.26
80-81
St. James’s September 15th 1775
Sir Robert Gunning
Sir,
It has been reported to me that the Court of Vienna has a scheme to obtain the entire navigation of the Danube, and to form a Levant Company, in order to do which it is said that one clement a merchant has actually undertaken to get ships built that shall be able to bear the rapidity of the currents, and that Monsr. Hugut is commissioned to solicit from the Porte the free navigation of the Black Sea. – Such a project must meet with too many difficulties (both natural and political) to have any probability of success; but the mere overture certainly cannot be agreeable at the court where you reside;

I am… Suffolk
