St. Petersbourg, July 29th/August 9th 1774
Earl of Suffolk
My Lord
….
I am just returned from Oranienbaum, whither, agreeably to the Invitation the Empress honoured the foreign ministers with, I went on Sunday last.- a little before my arrival there a messenger had brought Her Imperial Majesty an account of Marshal Romanzow’s having received the ratification from the Grand Vizir and that he (the Marshal) proposed dispatching Prince Repnin with them hither in a Day or two. As soon as he arrives the Empress intends coming to town in order to have Te Deum sung.
The impatience of the Grand Vizir to sign the peace was such that no less than then couriers were dispatched from his Camp to that of Marshal Romanzow to press the plenipotentiaries to conclude it. – It is supposed that Prince Repnin will be named ambassador to the Porte in order to adjust whatever may be left unsettled between the Marshal and the Grand Vizir.
Nothing can exceed the satisfaction which this great and glorious event had has afforded the Empress…

I have the honour to be with great respect
My Lord….
Gunning
