Abstract:

The other parts of the conduct of the inhabitants [of Corfu] with respect to the French, are, considering how much they abhor them, rather singular. They are determined not to be the aggressors in any particular, but at the same time, they do not conceal, that a general and resolute determination has been taken, not to suffer any provocation on the part of the French, to escape unrevenged. It may be observed, however, that this moderation on the part of the Greeks of this island, may take its origin, in a great measure, from the firm belief, which they entertain, that the course of events will soon remove the republicans from their temporary acquisition. At Zante, where private enmity is more prevalent, less tranquility is observed in the town; but the sentiments of the inhabitants of the country, and their fidelity towards their superiors, are as vigorous as at this place. I can assure Your Lordship, that, notwithstanding the artifices of the French, the respect and transport which the Islanders generally feel for the British nation, are singularly great, and I am fully persuaded, that if any English naval force, however small, should make its appearance in the neighbourhood of these Islands, the republicans would immediately fall a sacrifice to their hatred. This is particularly applicable to Zante, where a constant and advantageous commercial connection with the English nation, has strengthened their natural sentiments.
