Abstract:

Επιστολή του Φορέστη (Βενετία 24 Αυγούστου 1798) προς τον Grenville στην οποία μεταξύ άλλων αναφέρει: An address was also published by the commander of the Division, General Chabot (Corfu), intended to induce the merchants of the several departments, to furnish the squadron of the commander in chief with provisions; but I need not remark that the measure will be perfectly unavailing, for certainly no merchant will accede to it. .. enclose copies of these publications, and above all of a series of orders given by Bonaparte, while at Malta, and printed at Corfu, for the information of the inhabitants of all the departments. From the 5th article of this publication Your Lordship will perceive that whatever Greek of Malta and Gozo, or of the French departments in the Levant, preserved any connection with Russia shall be punished with death. And in the 6th article it is declared that any Greek vessel, under Russian colours, that may be taken by the French, shall be sunk. And here it may not improper to remark, that the Russian vice consul of Zante, detained at Corfu as a prisoner of war, was arrested in consequence of these measures, but a few days after my imprisonment. And the General had also given him orders to leave the Island, and proceed to Venice….
Και ο Φορέστης τονίζει, επίσης, για την απέχθεια των Ιονίων προς τους Γάλλους και πως ακόμα και μία μικρή δύναμη στρατιωτική θα μπορούσε να τους διώξει από τα νησιά….
