Republic of the Seven Islands
By the 5th Article of the Treaty of Campo Formio (which secured to Austria the City of Venice and its most immediate dependencies) the Emperor consented that France should possess en toute souverainete the Isles formerly Venetian in the Levant. Viz. Corfu, Zante, Cephalonia, Santo Mauro, and Cerigo and other islands dependant upon them – In the course of the year 1799 these Islands were successfully arrested from France by the combined Russian and Turkish forces – and towards the end of 1800 they were formed into an independent Republic, under the Title of “The Republic of the Seven United Islands” under the Protection of the Sublime Porte and under the guarantee of Russia.
