Abstract:

•    Επιστολή του Βρετανού πρεσβευτή στην Πύλη Sir Everard Fawkener (Κωνσταντινούπολη, 19 Δεκεμβρίου 1739) προς τον His Grace The Duke of Newcastle Secretary of State for the Southern Department στο Λονδίνο με την οποία τον ενημερώνει για την τελική ανταλλαγή των επικυρωμένων κειμένων της συνθήκης ειρήνης μεταξύ της Ρωσίας και της Πύλης, που έλαβε χώρα στις 17 Δεκεμβρίου και την τελετή ανταλλαγής πραγματοποίησε ο Γάλλος πρεσβευτής στον τουρκικό ναύσταθμο.
What is got or lost on either side is of no great importance as to the general scale and system of things in the world. But there is a circumstance which does not yet appear publicly, but which nevertheless is very material and that is the great diminution of estimation in which the Imperial and Russian courts were here and which was the strongest link in the chain of their friendship. In my opinion a much stronger one than that they have now put in the place of it. The Turks say the Muscovites have shown them the way through Poland, whenever there may be an occasion of trying it; and notwithstanding the ravage of Crimean Tartary, the demolition of Azov and Ochakov, the dismantling Khotyn (Chotin), and the laying Moldavia under contributions, I fear upon making up the account it will be found the Muscovites have been breaking their neighbors windows with ducats. France has been the great gainer by this conjuncture and every circumstance of it seems to have been formed on purpose to lead step by step to this conclusion […].
