St. Petersbourg, July 24th/ August 4th 1774
Earl of Suffolk
My Lord
….
It is with the highest satisfaction I have the honour of acquainting your lordship that Marshal Romanzow’s son arrived at Petershoff last night, and brought the Empress the agreeable and important News of the peace being signed on the 21st of July, by Prince REpnin (who had powers from the Marshal for that purpose) and two Turkish plenipotentiaries named by the Grand Vizir.
The principal and essential conditions of it were – The independency of the Crimea in as full and extensive a sense as this court ever desired it at any period of the negotiation – The absolute cession to Russia of Kinburn, Kerche and Jenikale – All the district between the Bog and the Dnieper which had formerly belonged to Russia and had been given up by the Peace of Pruth – A free navigation in all the Turkish Seas; in which is include the passage through the Dardanelles with all the privileges and immunities that are granted to the most favoured nations as the English and French – The payment of 4,500,000 roubles – Several stipulations in favour of the inhabitants of Moldavia and Wallachia, as well as of those of the islands restored by Russia to the Porte; …. Russia is to retain, as the Porte from the beginning agreed to, Azoff and Taganrok.

I have the honour to be with great respect
My Lord….
Gunning
